Auto groups are automatically populated groups of students that can be accessed through the Groups and Classes icon. An auto group can be formed based on almost any criteria of student data and has the same functionality for viewing progress or data as any other group.
Note: if you wish to have an additional auto group set for a specific group of students in your school, please contact the Hero Helpdesk.
ACCESSING AUTO GROUPS
1. Click on the Groups and Classes icon
2. Click on AUTO
3. From here you can either click on the above the group heading to view the students or click the pop up menu icon to access options for this group
4. To navigate to auto groups from previous years, click the arrow next to the displayed year
Due to the way that auto groups are updated throughout the year, previous years' auto groups will show the students in these groups as at the end of that year, i.e. the 2025 auto groups contain students in these groups as at the 31st December 2025.
TYPES OF AUTO GROUPS
Enrolment Status (eg. Current Students, Leavers, etc)- Students grouped together based on their current enrolment status. These groups are calculated using a combination of student status and attendance dates.
Team (eg. Junior, Senior): Students grouped within a larger learning community (ie. Team, Syndicate, Learning Hub, etc.) Site administrators can set up their Team Auto Groups with the instructions found in Setting up Team Auto Groups
Year Level (eg. Year 1, Year 2, etc): Students within each year level set from their actual year level
Programmes (eg. ESOL, Behaviour): Students who have posts made to the page of the same name. Site administrators can set any page to generate an Auto Group within the page settings - see the help article Editing Page Settings
Ethnic Groups (eg. Maori, Pasifika): Students who have identified as being an ethnicity set by the information in their Ethnicity field.
Gender (eg. Male, Female): Students who are of the same gender set by their gender field.
Attendance: These can be set up based on Absent % and/or Late %. Students will appear in these groups when their YTD attendance reaches the autogroup thresholds. e.g. Late > 10%, Absent > 40%.
School Fields (eg. Houses): Groups of students specific to your school that are set by a criteria ie. the House field.
